NATO asks member countries to give Patriot missile system to Ukraine

Apr 26, 2024

BRUSSELS, Belgium: NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has called on member countries to increase their support for Ukraine by offering more Patriot missile systems, addressing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s repeated appeals for additional Western air defense equipment.

“NATO has mapped out existing capabilities across the alliance, and there are systems that can be made available to Ukraine,” Stoltenberg told reporters after an online meeting of defense ministers from the 32-nation alliance, which Zelenskyy participated in remotely.

Ukraine has requested at least seven Patriot batteries, a sophisticated missile system that poses a significant threat to Russian aviation. Stoltenberg urged NATO allies to expedite the delivery of missiles, artillery, and ammunition to Ukraine, emphasizing that supporting Ukraine enhances collective security for all NATO members.

“Allies must dig deep into their inventories and speed up the delivery of missiles, artillery, and ammunition. Ukraine is using the weapons we provide it to destroy Russian combat capabilities. This makes us all safer,” he said.

“Support to Ukraine is not charity. It is an investment in our own security,” Stoltenberg added.

While acknowledging the security concerns of countries possessing Patriot batteries, he urged allies to prioritize Ukraine’s defense needs, even temporarily reducing their stockpiles.

Several NATO members, including Germany, Poland, Greece, the Netherlands, Romania, and Spain, possess Patriot missile systems. These systems offer a distinct advantage as Ukrainian troops are already trained in their use, enhancing their operational effectiveness.

Apart from providing new Patriot batteries, Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of ensuring that the systems sent to Ukraine are well-maintained, equipped with spare parts, and an ample supply of interceptor missiles. This comprehensive support aims to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and deter further aggression from Russia.

As NATO continues to monitor the situation and coordinate support for Ukraine, Stoltenberg reiterated the alliance’s commitment to safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
