PESHAWAR, Pakistan Severe Weather Causes Devastation in Southern KP Districts, Resulting in Casualties and Damage
A deadly combination of strong winds and heavy rains wreaked havoc in three districts of southern KP, leading to the tragic loss of at least 28 lives, including women and children, on Saturday.
Around 140 individuals were injured as a result of the calamity. The powerful winds battered the region, causing significant damage to residential properties, particularly the boundary walls of numerous homes.
Bannu district bore the brunt of the devastating winds, with many fatalities reported. Most of the deaths occurred due to roofs and walls collapsing throughout the district. In a distressing turn of events, approximately 70 goats and sheep also perished when walls collapsed under the force of the strong winds.
Responding swiftly to the crisis, authorities declared a state of emergency in all hospitals across Bannu to address the mounting medical needs. Leaves of doctors and paramedics were canceled, and they were instructed to resume their duties immediately. In addition, disruptions in power supply were observed in some regions of the Lakki Marwat district, where the intense winds toppled trees, causing them to fall onto transmission lines. Moreover, gusty winds triggered power outages in various neighborhoods of the provincial capital.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his sympathy and offered condolences to the grieving families. He directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to take decisive action in providing relief and facilitating rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas. The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for collaboration between the NDMA and the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to ensure a coordinated response.
