Netflix Show Critical of Crown Prince Blocked in Saudi Arabia

Jan 3, 2019

NEW YORK, New York – Netflix has blocked an episode from its show from streaming in Saudi Arabia after the Saudi government said that the episode dishonored the Cybercrime laws.

The episode “Patriot Act with Hassan Minhaj” was first shown in October.

Minhaj criticizes the longstanding relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia after the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Minhaj questions the role of Mohammed bin Salman in the killing of Khashoggi. However, the kingdom has denied the involvement of the crown prince in the murder saying that it was a “rogue” incident and 11 people have been charged.

Minhaj also criticized Saudi Arabia for its role in the military campaign in Yemen.

Netflix removed the episode from airing in Saudi Arabia last week. This is after receiving a takedown request from the Saudi government’s Communication and Information Technology Commission last month.

In a statement, Netflix defended its decision saying that they strongly support artistic freedom and only removed the episode from viewing in Saudi Arabia after receiving a valid legal request. It added that the episodes are available for viewing in other countries worldwide, and Saudi Arabia citizens could watch it through YouTube channel.
