JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – According to a report from Bloomberg, Saudi Arabian courts have declared a new regulation that will allow women to know the status of their divorce.
Courts will now be required to send women a text to confirm their divorce, starting Sunday.
This is to prevent incidences of secret divorces wherein men divorce their wives without the wives actually knowing.
Saudi lawyer Nisreen al-Ghamdi said in an interview with Bloomberg that this would allow divorced women to know and apply their alimony rights following their official divorce.
A local lawyer Samia al-Hindi also recounted to local newspaper Okaz that there were many women who have tried filing appeals to the courts because they did not know that they were being divorced.
The Bloomberg report states that the new regulation is to be a part of the economic and social reform that is being promoted by the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
