SYDNEY, May 27 (Xinhua) — A new police taskforce has been established to investigate and suppress a string of violent crimes in Sydney linked to organized gangs.
The police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) on Tuesday announced that Taskforce Falcon will oversee 13 investigations into shootings, kidnappings, arson attacks and organized crime activity in Sydney dating back to December.
A police statement said the taskforce would examine potential links between the incidents and be responsible for suppressing and disrupting the groups and individuals believed to be involved.
“The recent violence on our streets is horrific. We won’t tolerate these lawless thugs playing out their vendettas in our communities. When innocent people get caught up in them and are made to suffer, it’s sickening and barbaric,” NSW Police and Counter-terrorism Minister Yasmin Catley said.
The investigations the taskforce will oversee include those into two shootings that occurred in Sydney within one week.
