LOS ANGELES, California: A magnitude-4.3 earthquake struck near Carson, California on Friday night and was felt in cities throughout Southern California.

Carson is 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

The quake struck at 7:58 p.m., according to officials.

Following earthquakes, the Los Angeles Fire Department begins earthquake procedures, which include using vehicles and helicopters to check for damage within a 470 square-mile area.

Initial reports found no serious damage within the Los Angeles area.

There were, however, 7,600 emergency calls reporting shaking in the southern California area.

At Los Angeles International Airport, crews checked runways and terminals for damage following the earthquake.

Safety procedures also call for testing equipment at the Marathon Refinery in Carson, the Carson Sheriff’s Station reports.

“As a result of an earthquake and subsequent power loss that took place this evening, Marathon Petroleum’s Los Angeles refinery is conducting flaring. Flares are safety devices and the flares are functioning as intended. There are no injuries or off-site impact.” said the Communications Manager from Marathon Petroleum Corporation, as reported by NBC4.
