KARACHI, Pakistan – As Pakistan marked its 72nd Independence Day, several cases of aerial firing recorded across the country left three people dead and 35 others injured. 

According to local media reports in the country, the casualties took place in various incidents of aerial firing and firework displays by revellers during the country’s Independence Day celebrations and after that. 

Aerial firing has become a common trend in Pakistan and usually takes place during chand raats, New Year’s Eve, Independence Day and Shab-e-Baarat.

The police pointed out that cases of aerial firing can be registered under Section 337 (H) (II) of the Pakistan Penal Code for a negligent act of endangering lives.

They said that they have recorded several cases this week as a large number of residents marked the celebrations by resorting to aerial firing and bursting firecrackers.

The police said most cases were recorded in Karachi.

In one such case, the revelry near Five Star Chowrangi in North Nazimabad area led to the death of 22-year-old Salman Shakoor, who was hit by an exploding firecracker.

Another person, a 21-year-old man was also hit on his face by a rogue firecracker and while both were rushed to a hospital, Shakoor reportedly died during treatment.

A 26-year-old Sarmad Shabbir meanwhile, lost his life due to awry fireworks in another incident.

Shabbir, who was on a holiday from Dubai, was hit on his head by a firecracker and died after being hospitalized.

Another person was also reported dead during the celebrations.  

According to the police, over 35 people, including women and children, suffered injuries by stray bullets fired during the celebratory firing.
