Pompeo to visit Australia, Thailand, Federated States of Micronesia

WASHINGTON, DC – It will be all hands on deck in Australia next Sunday when the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrives for a visit.

Politicians and public servants will be working over the weekend as America’s top diplomat meets with a number of officials, including Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

On his way Down Under, Pompeo will pop into Thailand’s capital Bangkok on Thursday where he will co-chair the U.S.-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial and Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) Ministerial.

On Friday 2 August 2019 Secretary Pompeo will deliver remarks at the Siam Society on America’s economic engagement in the Asia-Pacific region.He will then participate in the East Asia Summit (EAS) Ministerial, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial, and hold a bilateral meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai.

On Saturday, the secretary will take the day off while jetting from Thailand to Australia.

On Sunday Pompeo, along with Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, who was sworn in on Tuesday of this week, will lead the U.S. delegation to the Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN). He will also deliver remarks on the U.S.-Australia relationship at the State Library of New South Wales. The secretary will also meet with the Australian prime minister on Sunday.

On Monday, the secretary will meet with Consulate General Sydney staff and family members, and then depart for the Federated States of Micronesia.

It will be the first-ever visit by a Secretary of State to the Federated States of Micronesia. While in Pohnpei, Pompeo will meet with the leaders of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. Pompeo will also meet with staff and family members of U.S. Embassy Kolonia before laying a wreath to honor the service of citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The secretary will arrive back in the United States on Monday August 6.
