SYDNEY, Australia – A 27-year-old Perth man has been caught carrying $100,000 in cash at Sydney Airport.
The man was searched at the airport by Australian Federal Police offoicers and one of their detector dogs.
The man, who had arrived in Sydney on a flight from Perth was carrying bundles of cash concealed inside a backpack within his checked luggage.
When the cash was found, the man told officers there was about $100,000 in the backpack. He fronted the Sydney Central Local Court on Wednesday to be formally charged with being in possession of property reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.
Sydney Airport Police Crime Manager Station Sergeant Scott Sykes said the arrest was a good example of the AFP’s capability to detect large amounts of currency on persons and within luggage leading to the seizure of currency relating to proceeds of crime.
In the Sydney court on Wednesday the man was remanded in custody until 24 April 2019.
