BRUSSELS, Belgium – The European Union Council has renewed an arms embargo and other sanctions on Myanmar for another year.
"The sanctions regime includes an embargo on arms and equipment that can be used for internal repression, an export ban on dual-use goods for use by the military and border guard police, and export restrictions on equipment for monitoring communications that might be used for internal repression," the council said in a statement on Monday.
The extension of the embargo also isolates the Myanmar military, preventing it from participating with militaries from other countries in military training, exercises and drills.
Fourteen senior officials and border guard police officers continue to be restricted in terms of travel and financial transactions under the sanctions "for serious human rights violations or association with such violations" in relation to conduct towards the oppressed Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine, Kachin and Shan states.
The resolution from the council passed on Monday called on the government of Myanmar to take "meaningful action" towards reform as set out in previous resolutions.
