Seeking to prevent ‘addiction,’ China to restrict children’s videos

Mar 3, 2023

BEIJING, China: China’s National Radio and Television Administration has said that as part of its efforts to prevent children from becoming addicted, the government will further restrict short videos on the internet.

After an internal meeting held on the issue of addiction by minors, the Television Administration asked parents on its website, “Create a clean space for short videos, improve the level of protection of minors, and play a subtle and positive role in cultivating sentiment, enlightening minds, and leading trends.”

China’s media regulators previously launched a campaign that has significantly tightened restrictions covering live streaming, video gaming, and Internet use among minors.

In 2022, regulators adopted policies that included banning minors from tipping live streamers, and ordering domestic streaming and social media platforms to conduct regular minor-focused cyber-protection assessments.

In a move aimed at combating gaming addiction among minors, in 2021 China introduced legislation limiting video gaming among under-18s to three hours per week.
