KABUL, Afghanistan – Five Afghan soldiers have been killed and 8 taken prisoner by the Taliban, after an ambush on a check-point in Afghanistan’s northern Kunduz province.
The deadly assault occurred when Taliban militants over-ran the check-point, taking the personnel manning it by surprise.
“The district’s Akhtar Tapi area police checkpoint collapsed last night during a fierce battle with the Taliban, five soldiers were killed, and eight others the Taliban took to an unknown place,” Hayatullah Amiri, the head of Kunduz’s Khanabad district, was quoted as saying by Sputnik on Wednesday..
The attack was allegedly carried out by the Taliban’s Red Group military unit, Amiri said.
Taliban militants looted the checkpoint of weapons and equipment, the official said.
The Taliban later claimed responsibility for the attack, confirming that it had killed five soldiers and detained 8 others.
