Toledo, ex-Peru president, returned from US to face corruption trial

Apr 25, 2023

LIMA, Peru: Former President Alejandro Toledo of Peru was returned to Lima Sunday where he will be tried for allegedly receiving millions of dollars in bribes in a scandal that has already implicated four ex-Peruvian presidents.

Toledo was extradited from the United States.

Toledo, president in Peru from 2001 to 2006, conducted a legal fight begun in 2019 to prevent his extradition from the United States.

Toledo, 77, was taken into custody at Lima’s airport on April 23.

Procedures call for Toledo to remain in prison for 18 months, as officials investigate his case.

Toledo has been charged with taking at least $20 million in bribes from Odebrecht, a giant Brazilian construction company. Odebrecht officials earlier told U.S. authorities that it had bribed officials throughout Latin America for decades to win contracts.

Toledo earlier denied taking the corruption charges.
