Aug 1, 2020

HANOI, Vietnam – An elderly man has died in Vietnam, registering the country’s first death from the coronavirus disease Covid-19.

According to local media the man had tested positive in Da Nang, the fifth largest city in the country.

Covid-19 cases began being reported in Da Nang last week for the first time in a little over three months.

The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) said testing in the city had been ramped up to contain the spreading of the disease. Tests are also being taken out on people returning to other parts of the country from Da Nang.

On Friday 45 new cases of coronavirus were reported in Vietnam, the biggest one-day reading in the country. The total number of cases now totals 509, according to the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.

The latest batch of new patients, according to VNA, include two cases in Hanoi – a 23-year-old man in Me Tri district and a 76-year-old man in Tay Ho district.
