With economy on minds of Americans, Biden approval rating at 41%

Jun 12, 2023

WASHINGTON D.C.: A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that following negotiations with congressional Republicans over the federal government debt, US President Joe Biden’s public approval stood at 41 percent, near the lowest level of his presidency.

The four-day poll showed that from last month, there was a marginal rise in Biden’s popularity, when 40 percent of respondents said they approved of his performance since taking office in January 2021.

The poll, whose margin of error is three percentage points, also showed that the economy remained the leading concern of Americans, amid high inflation and the Fed raising interest rates, which made mortgages and car loans more expensive.

Last week, Democrat Biden and US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the top elected Republican official, reached an agreement to suspend a limit on federal borrowing, ensuring that the government can still pay its bills.

Only 27 percent of Americans approve of how McCarthy is handling his job.

The poll also reported that some 56 percent of Americans supported sending more US weapons and financial aid to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

However, the backing for Kyiv is not evenly distributed across the two political parties, with some 73 percent of Democrats saying they backed more aid, compared to only 44 percent of Republicans.

Using a nationally representative sample, the poll collected responses from 1,056 American adults.
